Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena's statement in Parliament on the Constitutional Council's decision to appoint the Inspector General of Police

In a special statement, the priminister says that the President has no provision for appointing an Acting Inspector General of Police.

Accordingly, the Prime Minister points out that an Acting Inspector General of Police will not be appointed as expected by the Supreme Court, and that the position of Inspector General of Police is still held by the suspended Deshbandu Tennakoon, and that the position is not vacant.

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena further stated that only Parliament can question the decisions of the Constitutional Council, and no other institution can question its matters.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the decision taken by the Constitutional Council to appoint the current Inspector General of Police cannot be reversed by the Supreme Court and the decision of the Constitutional Council must be implemented.

Also, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena further stated that there is no legal basis in the injunction issued by the Supreme Court, and Parliament cannot accept an order that appears to be simply illegal without any legal basis.
