Sri Lanka's Higurakgoda airport will be upgraded for international flights

The construction works of the Higurakgoda Domestic Airport modernization project for international flights started yesterday 19 under the chairmanship of the Minister of Ports, Shipping and Aviation Services, Nimal Siripala de Silva.


 The development of the runway, which is being developed as the 5th international airport in Sri Lanka, is planned to be completed within 6 months, and the total cost of development is 17 billion rupees.


 Phase 1 will extend the existing 2287m long and 46m wide runway to 2500m and will be completed in six months to accommodate Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft.


 The minister said that 2 billion rupees have been allocated for the development of the airport in the 2023 government budget and that his ultimate goal is to operate Higurakgoda airport as an international civil airport like Mattala, Katunayake, Ratmalana and Palali airports.
