Sri Lanka Issues Weather Alert for Coastal Areas Today

Rough sea conditions in Sri Lanka coastal areas June 2026


COLOMBO – June 6, 2026: The Department of Meteorology in Sri Lanka has issued an urgent weather advisory for the island’s coastal regions, warning of rough seas and high wind speeds effective immediately.


​According to the latest bulletin issued at 05:30 AM today, residents and the maritime community are urged to remain vigilant.


​Weather Conditions

Heavy showers and thundershowers are expected in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Hambantota, passing through Colombo and Galle.


​Maritime Warnings

Maritime conditions are deteriorating across several regions:


​Wind Speeds: While average wind speeds are between 30–40 kmph, gusts in the sea area from Kankesanthurai to Kalpitiya (via Mannar) may reach 60–70 kmph. Other coastal stretches, including Trincomalee and Pottuvil, can expect gusts between 50–60 kmph.


​Sea State: The sea from Kankesanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar is forecast to be very rough. The remainder of the coastline is expected to remain rough to moderately rough at times.


​Tidal Surges: Sea waves between 2.0 to 2.5 meters are predicted in areas from Mannar to Pottuvil. There is a potential risk of wave surges encroaching upon coastal land areas between Chilaw and Matara.


​Public Advisory

The Department of Meteorology has highlighted that thundershowers may generate temporary localized gale-force winds, rendering sea conditions volatile. The maritime community is advised to monitor official updates closely before venturing into deep or shallow seas.
