Triggered by the betrayal of information related to drug trafficking, a severe clash erupted between two groups of inmates at the Negombo Prison yesterday afternoon (July 05). Although the initial confrontation had subsided to some extent by yesterday evening, it escalated once again into a devastating tragedy this morning.
Police confirm that with the renewed unrest this morning, the total death toll from this series of clashes has risen to 25. The greatest tragedy is that 5 of the deceased are prison officials. The remaining 20 victims are prison inmates, while the total number of injured individuals has now approached 100.
Authorities' Actions and Current Situation:
Following this severe unrest that has spanned two days, authorities are currently taking immediate steps to transfer inmates to other prisons in an effort to defuse the volatile situation and restore normalcy within the facility.
Furthermore, with the assistance of the Police Special Task Force (STF), a series of special security measures have been deployed to ensure the safety of the inmates' relatives and local residents gathered around the prison premises. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
