The National People's Power Election Commission has informed about the violation of the election law by appointing local government candidates as Governor's Coordinating Agent.
It is stated that the Secretary of the National People's Power Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa and lawyer Sunil Watagala met with the Election Commission this morning [02].
Accordingly, the Governor of the Southern Provincial Council, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, has appointed former local government councilors and chairmen as his coordinating representatives from May 4, 2024, saying that he is going to look into development programs in his local government areas.
They state that the purpose of these appointments is to carry out election promotion activities by providing funds available in the provincial council and local government bodies as direct grants for political purposes and this is clearly a misuse of state property and a violation of election laws.
They have further requested the Election Commission to conduct a formal investigation into the activities of the Southern Province Governor and intervene to prevent these illegal activities.
