Former Sri Lanka Deputy High Commissioner to Australia and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka in Peniva, Himali Arunathilak, has been ordered by the Federal Court of Australia to pay compensation of $543,000 in unpaid wages and interest for having used her housekeeper as slave labor.
Announcing the order, the court stated that she had cheated her employee Priyanka Dhanaratne of the minimum wage, who worked in Canberra from 2015 to 2018.
It has been revealed that her employee, Priyanka Dhanaratne, has been working from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm for a period of three years, and during that time, she was given leave only once when she had an accident.
It has also been revealed that she was paid only $11,200 for her service, which is $75 per hour, and that she was not given a chance to leave home after taking possession of her foreign passport.
