The world's largest diamond

A huge 2,492-carat diamond was recently found in Botswana, and it might be the second-largest gem-quality diamond ever discovered.

The diamond was uncovered by Lucara Diamond Corp, a Canadian mining company, at their Karowe diamond mine. A photo shared by the company shows the massive rough diamond sitting in the palm of a hand.

The biggest gem-quality diamond ever found was the 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond, which was mined in South Africa in 1905 when the country was still under British rule. That diamond was given to King Edward VII and was cut into several gems, some of which are now part of the Crown Jewels in the UK.

Lucara’s president, William Lamb, expressed his excitement about finding this incredible 2,492-carat diamond, calling it an "extraordinary" discovery.

Lucara hasn't revealed how much the diamond is worth or whether it can be cut into smaller gems. Botswana’s government stated that this is the largest diamond ever discovered in the country.

The Karowe mine has a history of producing large diamonds. For instance, in 2019, Lucara found the 1,758-carat Sewelo diamond there, which was then the second-largest diamond ever mined. The luxury brand Louis Vuitton bought it for an undisclosed amount, even though the diamond was black and it wasn't clear how many gems could be made from it.

Another big find at the Karowe mine was the 1,111-carat Lesedi La Rona diamond, which was sold to a British jeweler for $53 million in 2017.

The largest diamond ever found, however, was the black Sergio stone, discovered above ground in Brazil in 1895. It was later cut into pieces to be used in industrial drills. Black diamonds like the Sergio are believed to be fragments of meteorites.

Even though Russia is the biggest producer of diamonds globally, Botswana has recently seen the discovery of many large, valuable diamonds. The southern African country has been working to increase its influence in the diamond industry. Last year, Botswana negotiated a larger share of diamonds mined by De Beers, a company owned by Anglo American, in a new 10-year deal.

Botswana’s president, Mokgweetsi Masisi, is expected to be one of the first to see Lucara’s new diamond before it is shown to the public, according to the government.

The facts here were obtained from foreign media I thank all those media houses
