sri lanka e driving license

Mr. Engineer Ranjith Rubasinghe, Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Highways explained that the reports that it has been decided to cancel all driver's licenses that have not been updated are completely false and no such decision has been taken.

He also disclosed that a new system will be introduced to update the information of nearly 02 million drivers license holders whose licenses have not been updated.  He said that a new method of updating information will be implemented soon and the entire updating process is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Mr. Rubasinghe also mentioned that approximately 12.3 million driver's licenses have been issued since the first driver's license was issued in Sri Lanka in the 1960s.

That digitization of all services in the transport sector is currently underway and procurement for digitization of black marks and spot fines is nearing completion.  From January 1, 2025, fines and on-the-spot penalties will be enforced through this new system, which will require up-to-date information on all driver's licenses.

He further mentioned that e-Driving license is expected to be introduced in the first six months of 2025.

These comments were made at a press conference held at the Presidential Media Center on August 23.
