NEGOMBO, SRI LANKA – Reports indicate that a severe clash erupted inside the Negombo Prison today (July 05) afternoon, resulting in the deaths of two inmates and leaving 35 others injured and hospitalized.
According to internal prison sources, the violent altercation between two groups of inmates was triggered by the leaking of information related to drug trafficking operations. The incident has created a highly volatile and tense atmosphere within the prison premises.
Casualties and Medical Transfers
A total of 35 individuals who sustained injuries during the clash were admitted to the Negombo District General Hospital, where two were pronounced dead upon arrival. Two other inmates who are in critical condition have been transferred to the Colombo National Hospital for advanced medical treatment.
Acts of Violence and Unrest
Reports state that inmates attacked one another using iron rods and stones found within the prison premises as makeshift weapons. As authorities struggled to bring the situation under control, a group of inmates escalated the unrest by climbing onto the prison roof to stage a protest, further intensifying the tension within the facility.
Security Measures and Current Situation
Prison authorities, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Police, have taken immediate steps to contain the violence. To reinforce safety and tighten security around the perimeter of the prison, the assistance of the Police Special Task Force (STF) has been deployed.
Authorities are currently working to fully restore internal control of the facility while the injured continue to receive medical care. The Department of Prisons is expected to conduct an investigation to identify the parties responsible for the incident and initiate strict legal action against them.
