Nishantha Anuruddha Wirasinghe, the Commissioner General of the Motor Vehicle Department, says that neither the Motor Vehicle Department nor the Government has taken a policy decision on the cancellation of driver's licenses.

However, he said that in consultation with the Ministry of Transport, considering the situation that has arisen regarding road safety, work has been started to implement a system of giving black marks to driving licences.

Accordingly, he mentioned that the basic activities related to the implementation of this new system within the next three months are currently being created.

According to the ticket issued by the traffic police officer after a driver commits a traffic offense through the new system, the digital system has been prepared for the payment of fines at the same time and it is stated that the penalty points for that offense will be added to the driver's license.

He further stated that after this system of black points reaches 24 points, the driver's license will be revoked and in order to regain the revoked driver's license, a driver must complete all the tasks again after one year.
