Sri Lankan passports

The Department of Immigration and Emigration states that the issuance of passports has to be limited due to the limited number of passports.

The government has taken steps to introduce new electronic passports and it is reported that a tender has already been awarded to a foreign company for the supply of passports by inviting international bids.

However, considering the limited stock of blank passports currently owned by the Immigration and Emigration Department, the Ministry of Public Security stated that it has procured 50,000 normal blank passports from the same company that ordered the electronic passports as part of the same order.

This stock of passports is expected to arrive in the island at or before the end of October and until the stock of blank passports is procured, the Department of Immigration and Emigration further requests the public to apply for passports only for essential reasons.

The announcement is below.
